08 The history of Japan is a long series of conflicts between lords and of civil wars to obtain the shogunate. The political situation at the time of the missionaries' arrival was favorable to the development of Christianity. The daimyo, local feudal lords, were absolute masters in their domains and jealous of their independence. The daimyo could accept or prescribe in all freedom the Christian religion with no one to contradict them. Moreover, by embracing this religion, they gave themselves greater independence. Through the missionaries they could enter in relations with the heads of foreign states and send or receive embassies. This also explains why Christianity obtained so much success among the territorial nobility, whose example obviously had a strong influence on samurais and on the people.
